Doug Ford's promise to protect the greenbelt is being broken again by this latest bill, Bill 97, using the housing shortage as an excuse to facilitate sprawl development everywhere. A shortage of land is not the cause as the 2022 Ontario Housing Affordability Task Force states, "Land is available, both inside the existing built-up areas and on undeveloped land outside greenbelts...Most of the solution must come from densification." 

Some of the deeply concerning changes of Bill 97 are: 

• weakening and eliminating existing policies that address climate change and rein in urban sprawl

• removing municipalities' right to undertake watershed planning

• allowing  municipalities to expand settlement areas without a comprehensive review of infrastructure needs or potential impacts on farmland and natural areas

• forcing municipalities to allow 3 lots to be severed from every farm, even in prime agricultural areas

• exempting lands under MZOs (Minister's Zoning Orders) from complying with  provincial policies and official plans.
